Bronchial thermoplasty delivered by the Alair® System is a minimally invasive procedure that delivers precisely controlled thermal energy to the airway wall to reduce the amount of airway smooth muscle and lessen these musclesÂ’ ability to narrow the airway, thereby reducing symptoms in patients with severe asthma.
Asthmatx, Inc. has taken a thoughtful step-wise scientific approach in its development of the Alair® Bronchial Thermoplasty System. To date, Asthmatx has conducted 4 clinical studies in patients with asthma at over 30 institutions around the world. These studies have demonstrated a consistent and acceptable safety profile over the long-term and therapeutic benefits over and above standard medical care.
The Alair® Bronchial Thermoplasty System developed by Asthmatx was approved by the FDA on April 27, 2010 for the treatment of severe persistent asthma in patients 18 years and older whose asthma is not well controlled with inhaled corticosteroids and long acting beta agonists.
